St Mary’s is a friendly, growing church with a sense of family. We are looking forward to “Greater Things” (John 14: 12).

Our parish stretches from the River Thames to the Old Kent Road, and from London Bridge Station to St Saviour’s Wharf. Our congregation is a lively mix of people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds, reflecting the rich diversity of our Parish and of the wider Church.

The words of Ephesians 2.14 have a special relevance for us as a Christian community in the heart of London:

“He tore down the wall we used to keep each other at a distance” Ephesians 2: 14

All are warmly welcome to join us as we encourage each other to explore our Christian faith and develop it further. We believe that every one of us is precious to God. Whilst we recognise that we are all at different stages on our journey of faith, we seek to be Biblical, open to the Holy Spirit and willing to allow the teachings of Jesus Christ to shape our lives

Our vision is that

As Christians worshipping together in Bermondsey, we are seeking to live for the glory of God by following Jesus in the reality of God’s world.

We believe that our lives and stories can only be fully understood in the light of God’s story and in particular, Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. We hope that through our worship, conversations, Bible study and prayer, friendships and wrestling with life’s questions, we can together discover what it means to know and follow Jesus as we share his life-changing love and goodness with others.

Amongst other things this conviction is expressed through regularly meeting to pray and work with other local churches and organisations for the physical and spiritual transformation of our area. In addition to being part of the Church of England (Diocese of Southwark), St Mary’s is also a member of a local network of churches and Christian organisations, known as C4T (Christians for Transformation in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe). Together, we have been inspired by the words of Jeremiah 29.7:

“…. seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you….Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Despite the challenges of building relationships with God and each other in the midst of the constantly changing city and community around us, we believe that St Mary’s church is “here for good” in every possible sense.

Boutcher Primary School

Boutcher Church of England Primary School is the St Mary’s church school and is located on Grange Road.

There have always been strong links between the church and school, the playground of which stands on the former site of St Luke’s church, part of this parish. These links continue to be expressed today in many ways: As well as the weekly Holy Communion service for Key Stage 2 on Fridays during term time, the Rector and members of St Mary’s also serve as school governors. We consider the relationship between Church and School to be of vital importance as we seek to serve the local community together
